陈末（曾一竣饰）因业绩超前被老板秦川（孙雪岩）带到酒吧放松，苹果看到台上热舞的凌菲不禁陷入回忆，苹果原来两人曾是情侣，因陈末家境贫寒被凌菲父亲当众羞辱，从此立誓发愤图强，有朝一日报复回去

日伪时期，商否女作家沈韶华（林青霞饰）在报纸上连载她的自传体小说《白玉兰》，很多情节感同身受。然而，列减见到日本军人凌辱中国人，月凤顿觉章面目可憎。

终于，苹果两人见面，一见钟情。此时，商否她的闺中密友月凤（张曼玉饰）因与男友（严浩饰）赌气，来找她倾诉。三人一起出游，列减感情很好。

某日，苹果她接到了一位神秘的读者来信。商否本片根据三毛最后一部同名作品改编。

此后，列减时局动荡，日本投降，国共开战，韶华的情感经历了更加复杂的波澜……

这是一部以真人真事为基础改编的实验电影，列减讲述一个上海大公司女白领和大理本地男人相恋又错过的爱情故事。编导演等主创人员都是在大理本地定居的街坊邻里，苹果出演本片的非职业演员都是第一次演戏，本片也是导演的第一部电影长片处女作

莫妮卡是一名吸毒的应召女郎，商否但她依旧很天真。莫妮卡不知不觉陷入毒品走私计划之中，列减两人在这晚被腐败的警察、黑帮、利奥的对手以及三合会派来的女杀手追杀。
